FAQ

What can I expect from class?

You will joyously share songs, movement, and instrument play activities with other families in an informal, non-performance oriented environment. Our goal is to nurture each child’s ability to make and enjoy music, and provide them with a positive experience that will hopefully lead them on a life-long journey of music making. Music ability is as much a basic life skill as walking and talking. All children can learn to sing in tune, keep a steady beat, and participate with joy in the music of their culture.

What are the expectations of the child?

Children may or may not actively participate in class, but they are certainly taking in all the sights and sounds around them.  Each child has his or her own unique learning style.  While some children may eagerly jump in and participate, others may prefer to quietly observe.  We respect the unique learning styles of each child and focus on the process rather than the product, as the class is

non-performance oriented.  However you will be amazed at home much your child absorbs and how responsive they are to music as a result of having rich musical experiences both in class and at home.

Oh no! My child won’t sit still for 45 minutes. What should I do?

No worries! Most young children will not sit for this length of time. The children are free to explore the room and while doing so, they are still taking in all the musical sights and sounds around them. We do ask you to step in if safety becomes a concern.  Even though your child may be wandering the room, please continue to participate in the circle or take the song or movements over to your child.

What are the expectations of the parent or caregiver?

Sing out and move to the music!  Take this time to enjoy the great feeling that comes from making and sharing music with others. Your child will love to hear your comforting and familiar voice.  It doesn’t matter what your musical ability is, your model as a music maker has a profound affect on your child.  If they see you having a great time making music, chances are they’ll want to make music too.  We only see you once a week, so we rely on you to continue the musical sharing with your child at home.  Just like they learn how to walk or talk from you, they learn how to make music from you.

How should we use the Music Together materials?

Play your CD at home and in the car as often as possible, especially at the start of the session. It can be used during playtime, before bedtime, or even on long commutes in the car.  The more familiar the songs are to your child, the more enjoyable the in-class experience will become.  You may even feel inspired to make up new lyrics to accompany everyday tasks like cooking, shopping, or walking to the park.  Finding ways to integrate music into daily life is the easiest way to bring music into the home.

The songbook contains a wealth of information including lyrics, music notation, illustrations, and activity ideas. The songbook can be used at story time instead of a regular book, providing you and your child with yet another opportunity to bond through music.  Some children even enjoy coloring the illustrations.  As the children flip through the book, they begin to recognize what lyrics and music notation look like and understand that music is something that can be read, like words. An early introduction to music notation will help them when they are ready for more formal music studies.

What if I start classes after the session begins?

If there is space available, the fee will be pro-rated to reflect your start date.

Can we bring additional guests to class?

If you are interested in bringing extra guests to class (relatives, friends, older siblings), please call in advance to ensure that there is space. Of course we’d love to include everyone, however we want to make sure that there is enough space for everyone to feel comfortable.

What happens if we miss a class?

One make-up class per session is available, provided there is space available in another class. Please call the studio at 604-421-3753 to confirm your make-up time with the administrator.  There will be no refunds for missed classes. Make-ups must be done within the session.

If you're going to be away please notify us ahead time.  This gives us the opportunity to offer your spot as a make-up.

To maintain a safe and healthy environment, please reschedule your class time if you child is ill.

What is the class size?

6 – 12 young children and their parents or caregivers

What should we wear?

Dress comfortably as we do move and groove in the class.  To keep the room clean for the little ones, we ask that you leave your shoes at the door. To prevent slips, you may want to have socks or slippers with grip for your child.

Are food and beverages allowed in the space?

In order to keep the space clean, please refrain from bringing snacks or beverages into the music making space. However, feel free to bring in your water bottle or water sippy cup.

Is the facility stroller accessible?

If you have concerns regarding stroller accessibility, please inquire about the location you are signing up for when you are registering.
